Favorite
The team the betting market considers more likely to win a game.
The favorite is the team expected to win, usually shown with a negative spread (for example, "-4.5"). The bigger the number, the clearer the gap in level between the two teams is considered to be by the market.
Favorite status isn't a guarantee — it just reflects an estimate based on form, injuries, home-field advantage, and other factors available when the line was set. Upsets, where the underdog wins outright, are common enough to be part of the league's appeal.
The opposite of the favorite is the underdog — the team the market considers less likely to win.
